Obtaining a residence extension in Denmark

Denmark is among the few EU countries recruiting qualified and skilled foreigners through their Danish green card scheme. The scheme not only enables you to be employed and reside there but it also allows you settle there with your family or your spouse and in addition your spouse is free to work there too. Apart from the Denmark green card scheme you can also immigrate to Denmark through the positive list scheme that grants a work and residence permit to persons with skills in occupations that have inadequate professionals.

There is also the pay limit scheme whereby a foreigner becomes eligible for a permit in Denmark because they have been offered a job that is paying more than DKK 375,000 per year. The other scheme is the corporate scheme that allows employees working for a global company that has a subsidiary in Denmark to be stationed there for a period of time. There are certain groups of people that have easy access to Denmark including researchers but you have to state why you should be the one carrying out the research and not any other person. Others include athletes, Trainers, musicians, diplomats and religious workers who are exempted from certain requirements.

Extension
It is possible to extend your stay in Denmark after the original one has expired or is due to expire. If you wish to apply for this the first and primary condition is that you still meet the original permit’s stipulations and you have to apply before the original permit expires otherwise the application will be rejected as you are regarded as being in Denmark illegally.

If you had been granted a renewable 3 year term you can apply for an extension to four years. Extension can also be done if you have worked for at least 10 hours a week for the past 1 year or if you have lost your job 3 months prior to application for an extension.

For whichever kind of extension there is a specific application form and you are advised to use the correct form for the type of extension you are applying for.
